Thermowell
Thermowells are expertly engineered to provide robust protection for temperature sensors in various industrial applications. Designed to withstand extreme conditions, our thermowells ensure accurate temperature measurement and sensor longevity. Available in flanged, threaded, socket weld, and Van Stone designs, our thermowells offer versatile solutions for all your temperature measurement needs. We also offer full penetration welds on our flanged thermowells and provide comprehensive non-destructive testing, including dye penetrant testing. Additionally, we perform wake frequency calculations as per ASME PTC 19.3 to ensure the highest reliability and safety standards.
The Thermowell from IPS Automation is an industrial temperature measurement accessory
designed to protect temperature sensors such as RTDs, thermocouples, bimetal thermometers,
and temperature gauges from direct exposure to process media. It acts as a pressure-tight
protective pocket installed into pipelines, tanks, vessels, reactors, and process equipment,
allowing the sensor to measure temperature safely while remaining isolated from pressure,
corrosion, flow velocity, vibration, and mechanical damage. Thermowells also allow temperature
sensors to be removed, replaced, or calibrated without draining the line or shutting down the
process, making them essential for reliable industrial temperature monitoring.
Thermowells are available in different connection styles such as threaded, flanged, socket weld,
weld-in, and sanitary designs, with shank profiles including straight, stepped, and tapered types.
The correct design is selected based on process pressure, temperature, fluid velocity, corrosion
resistance, insertion length, sensor size, response time, and plant safety requirements. For
demanding services, thermowells are commonly machined from solid bar stock to provide
higher strength and durability, while material selection may include stainless steel, carbon steel,
alloy steel, Monel, Hastelloy, Inconel, or other compatible materials depending on the process
fluid.

Custom Engineered Construction
Thermowells can be manufactured according to sensor size, bore diameter, insertion length, material grade, process connection, pressure class, temperature range, and project-specific industrial requirements.
Enables Sensor Removal Without Shutdown
A major advantage of thermowells is that sensors can be removed, replaced, or calibrated while the process remains sealed, reducing downtime and avoiding the need to drain or depressurize the system.
Extends Sensor Service Life
Thermowells reduce direct exposure to harsh media and flow forces, helping extend the operating life of temperature sensors and lowering replacement costs.
Improves Operational Safety
By isolating the temperature sensor from hazardous or pressurized media, thermowells help reduce leakage risk, protect personnel, and support safer maintenance in critical process applications.
Multiple Design Options
Thermowells are available in threaded, flanged, socket weld, weld-in, straight, tapered, and stepped designs, allowing selection based on process connection, response time, strength, and maintenance requirements.
Protects Temperature Sensors
Thermowells create a strong physical barrier between the process fluid and the temperature sensor, protecting RTDs, thermocouples, and thermometers from corrosion, pressure, erosion, vibration, and mechanical impact.
Suitable for Harsh Industrial Conditions
With material options such as SS316L, Duplex stainless steel, Hastelloy, and other corrosion resistant alloys, weld pad level gauges can be designed for corrosive fluids, high temperatures, high pressures, and aggressive process environments.
Supports Accurate Temperature Measurement
A properly designed thermowell positions the sensor at the correct insertion depth and protects it from unstable process conditions, helping maintain consistent and reliable temperature readings.
